Animation Evaluation (Scary ride)

Animation is one of the hardest and most time consuming projects I’ve ever done in my life. But it allows me to enlighten myself with software which I would normally never use. Whilst attending my seminar, at times I felt stressed and almost frustrated like I’ve never been before, due to the time and effort you have to put into a project as extreme as this. Our task was to design a scary ride suitable for people and to create some fear in their eyes.

After further research, I decided to use scary clowns as my theme. The reason why I chose this specific theme is because I personally have a fear of clowns; their mentally disturbing faces, physiologically effect the human mind, as it’s dissimilar from a normal face. Once I chose my theme I moved on to developing the story for my ride, as I wanted specific objects, on specific parts of my ride. I started off by designing my main entrance, giving it a scary theme. This would allow the people attending the ride to understand the theme of the journey they are about to attend. I designed a storyboard suitable for my theme; this gave me a clearer view in which I could proceed in developing a ride which would attract people from both the inside and outside of the ride. I used a program called “3D Studio Max”, such a complicated program. After numerous attempts on working with the program I started to taking in the necessary information needed to start designing my piece. Whilst modelling my piece I tried to capture a scary theme in every area, as I was drawing any idea which came into my head on paper.

This really helped me as I already had it on paper, so I could refer back to it whenever I wanted, although my drawing is not at a high standard, it was understandable to me anyway. The positives I’ve taken from this project are, it allowed me to enhance my ability to design something from scratch, from my own imagination, which of course fits in perfectly with the course I am studying. I would say there are plenty of things I could of done better, which would of improved the project I am currently doing, these consist of time management and putting more effect in to the work I do in seminar’s rather than doing most of the work at home. However having said all this, I think I ended up with a decent piece, considering how worried I was about this animation piece in term two. The rendering process is basically a waiting ‘game’ as you just wait for your piece to form slowly, hoping everything fitted in perfectly as you designed it. If I was to redo this project again I think I would add even more scary objects like dead clowns rising from the ground, this would add to the creepy effect, I’ve been trying to portray.
